In a cash game it’s a raise…and stupidly, in a tourney game it’s a call. I’ve done both in Vegas and it was ruled as such.

I hate players that do shit like that. Be clear in your actions, if there might be any confusion, then verbalize it. Be clear with your raises, calls, checks, cashing in or out. I'm almost preachy with my players, be clear and verbalize if there is anything odd. It's not because I think you are cheating or an angle shooter, but don't even put yourself in a position to be accused. Nothing ruins a home game faster than if somebody gets accused, correctly or not, of cheating or angle shooting.

In my game, that's a raise. Single chip calls but chips are in play, so it's a raise unless they pull the blind and state the action.

But I'd also clarify and ask the action before moving to the next player.

Is it possible the dealer didn't see Big Blind pick up the $5 and thought he simply threw out one oversized $100 chip?

Nope. It was a strong dealer with a ton of experience. He saw the whole thing and made the correct ruling.

But my PSA is that I understand this is a home game forum and home game rules and procedures are nothing like casinos. I'm just trying to give some insight as to what poker employees, working in a poker room would do. I completely understand how this logic and ruling would and should go any other way in a home game.

I deal in private raked cash game.

Adding a one chip to the blind is always a call.

I will clarify by saying “name of the player” call and moving the action on to the next player.

Throwing in one chip when facing a bet is a call. There is a way around this rule if you don’t want to announce raise. You can bring out the $5 and pick up the BB and put both chips in together. This is a chip manipulation rule which would make this a raise. I don’t know why players like to do this. Always best to announce imo

Several people have said the correct method would be to pull back the blind first then add a single chip, but in several of the games I play in, we have been told repeatedly to not remove chips or make change from a bet until action for that round is finished , and then only the dealer should make change. Taking back chips would sort of violate this rule.

I strongly suspect that you or someone misinterpreted "don't make change from the pot". Otherwise, you play in several of the most non-standard rooms in North America.
