Scotch is my trash, your treasure. Respect!

What’s everyone’s prize top shelf bottle? I’m curious

Here’s mine. I overpaid and don’t regret it at all.

Some of you have heard me say that I'm very new to caring about whiskey. Only been paying attention for about two months now. I lucked my way into an ECBP C922 right at the start and have not had the chance to buy anything better yet.

But I am really looking forward to my next big family gathering. My son is a bartender and has a big collection of good stuff, so he shares some with me. But he was telling me about last Christmas when we had a large family get together. My niece is married to a man who's asst manager at a liquor store in Colorado. He buys everything he can get his hands on. In other words, whatever the owner lets him buy.

So we had this big meeting room in the hotel where we were all staying. I was oblivious, just organizing the poker games and drinking my usual craft beer. All around me were these amazing bottles of whiskey, and I had no clue... LOL. My son knew that my niece's husband would be bringing good stuff, as he had brought some to my son's wedding the year before. So he managed to get his hands on a Weller CYPB, and a few other good bottles. He was showing me photos of what was there being shared with everyone, and some of it I didn't even recognize. But I do know there was a WL Weller and Weller 107, and several other rare bottles. I'll have to get him to send me the photo he took of the lineup to remind me.

Crack 'er open!

I keep finding bottles that I need to kill.

I have to say: The first half of this bottle was WAAAAAY overpriced. But the second half was fantastic. I guess I feel that way about every toasted and double oaked bottle that I try. Except maybe the Sagamore Double Oak.

I killed my George T Stagg last month… so it would be another one. Or WLW. After that, probably Parker’s Heritage. Then Heaven Hill 17yr. Still kicking myself for passing on one earlier this year.

Of what I have, probably the two bottles of Thomas H Handy. Or Old Forester 150th Anniversary. Or Old Fitzgerald 9yr. Or Willett 80th Anniversary. None are open though, except Handy.

Of course, I don’t NEED another store pick. But why pass on the opportunity? To borrow from the great comedian Ron White, “Once you try one ECBP store pick, you want to try them all.”

The one EC Private Barrel I've had has blown away every ECBP I've tasted in 3-4 years of this addiction. I don't think I love the Elijah Craig target profile, too nutty and dusty, but the Private Barrel is spectacular, annoyed I didn't grab 1-2 more.

Respect my authority! KoK or bust!

With what I know of the people on here, you should all save yourselves and NEVER try this bourbon. Drinking this and coming home to your Blanton is like playing with casino Paulson chips for the first time and then coming home to your dice chips.

This Bowman is better than this Blanton’s. Does that really mean anything? I don’t know. They both are really damn good and very hard to find for most.

I think the Bowman’s slightly higher proof and approximate 10yr age plays s huge part in my assessment of it over Blantons. Glad you enjoyed it! FWIW…your pour was only the second pour from that bottle and it wasn’t opened but for a few days before I made your sample. It starts great and only gets better! The fact that it held up to an opened bottle of Blantons is testament to how good these Bowman’s can be.

Sadly, I can’t find the Bowman’s SiB like I used to and Blantons is never available here.

Question for the brain trust: a very good well-priced bourbon for cocktails?
I'm pretty new to this game, so my opinion may not hold much water. But here goes. Obviously cocktails are adding things to your whiskey, so you're not going to appreciate all the nuances of the spirit. My sweet spot for cocktails is 100 proof. I also like Rye in cocktails more often than bourbon, but the same thought holds true. I like OF Bottled in Bond Rye and I just picked up a Wild Turkey 101 Rye that I haven't cracked yet, but expect to be excellent in cocktails. Both of these are under $24 here. For bourbons, I just don't put my best stuff that I like neat in cocktails. I'd never put my ECBP or anything that's been finished in a sherry, port or rum barrel, such as my Angel's Envy, in a cocktail, other than maybe in a Old Fashioned, since there's not too much in there besides the whiskey. Basically, the more complex the cocktail, the more likely I am to just use good, easy to find, reasonably priced 100 or 101 proof whiskeys.
