The cheap whiskey thread (3 Viewers)

It's good for what it is. Remember, Eagle Rare is also 10yrs at 90 proof, and is supposed to be this price!
For sure. Eagle Rare is great stuff, and If I ever see it on the shelf at retail, I will probably buy every bottle they allow me to. But it typically is either impossible to find, or priced well above retail.

Anyway, I have no issue with good 90 proof whiskey. That's why I'm asking the question. So are you saying Russell's 10 is comparable to ER? If so, then I guess I need to run to TW and grab a bottle ASAP!

Before the plague, Walgreens Liquor in Orlando was selling Eagle Rare for $29.99 and seemed to have it once a week. I haven't seen it since. Whatever happened?

RR10 is not up to par with Eagle Rare. But it is very good for $31. However, in that range, I'd rather have Cooper's Craft at 100 proof.

Thanks. Just the info I was looking for. I'll get around to picking one up one of these days. And in a search for the Cooper's Craft, it seems that one may not be available in Texas. At least not from a Houston area TW.

Oh wow. Cooper's Craft should be easy to find. It was Brown-Forman's replacement for Early Times after they sold it off. Pretty good for $30.

I got a bottle for Christmas from someone who clearly doesn’t know me. I can’t even take a small sip. Real question- what is good whiskey supposed to feel/taste like?
If you are not a big fan of whiskey and would like to be try Angels Envy. It's on the more expensive side, but it is incredibly smooth and has a wonderful flavor. By far my favorite, both the rye and the original. Whistle pig is also good, as well as the rabbit hole mentioned above

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve heard others recommend that also. Will try it out and report back!

Outside the obvious Total Wine and Specs megamarts, I found a solid selection of bourbons at Rice Fine Wines and Liquor in Bellaire. Haven’t been back in a while as I picked up a bunch last time and I’m not often in Houston. Might be worth a call.

Thanks for the tip. My youngest son lives in Bellaire, so I get over there every now and then. I'll check it out next time I'm in the area. How were prices?

Russell's Reserve is from a smaller company that isn't in to over pricing their product.
Buffalo Trace doesn’t overprice their product. Look at MSRP for any of it. Retailers and taters drive up the prices.

I don't know that I'd consider them to be a small company within the spirits industry. Russell's is part of Wild Turkey, which is owned by the Compari Group, a company with around $2 billion in annual revenues. But I do agree that much of their lineup (including WT) is very fairly priced. I guess I was mostly looking at the pricing difference between RR10 and RR13, which is why I asked if proof is a major factor. It's pretty unusual to find a 10 year old bourbon that cheap that you can almost always find on the shelf, so that was the point of my question.

Eagle Rare was mentioned, but that's extremely hard to find at it's retail price. Maybe a better comp would be Knob Creek 9, which is a little higher proof and only a little more expensive. Anyone have an opinion on those two head to head?

Wild Turkey (40.5%)

I love my WT101 but I recently joined a friend who only drinks bourbon and coke so I bought us the standard WT.

I haven't had this one for ages so I was keen to re-acquaint myself....it is cheap enough and in all honesty, mixes well with Coke (although I prefer others straight).

I guess the extra rye in the mash bill is doing it's thing here against the coke.

I don't think I've ever seen "regular" WT around here. The 101 is fantastic.

My local grocery had Knob Creek 9 on sale for $35. It had been a while since I had it. I had forgotten how much I like it.

Knob Creek (either the 9 year or the rye) is my go-to affordable bourbon atm. Can't go wrong! George Dickel is also pretty nice. Cheers!

Basic stuff for Friday's game.
Teacher's, IMHO, is by far the best blended humble Scotch. Excellent value for money.
Jack, even in basic form, isn't exactly cheap in Europe, but is easier to find than true (and anyway more expensive) bourbons.
A friend once called it "the most indecent bourbon around in the Athens basin":)

My cheap whiskey score this weekend. 1783 for $21, and the Knob Creek Old Fashioned for $14. Couldn’t pass that up.

That knob creek mix is just fine. Great to take to a party or poker night.

The Barsmith Old Fashioned mix is pretty good too with your favorite whiskey. Though, I only use half of the recommended mix.

I prefer the Bulleit to the KC, but both are fine. I’ll look for the Barsmith.

I've had two different flavors of Proof Old Fashioned Mix but was too expensive. And then I stumbled on Woodford Reserves mix for ~$16 and it's pretty delightful
