$39 for 1.75L of Elijah Craig seems like a steal.
 
After the discount, and the in-store reward, the Rebel Yell came out to about $12. I figure it will at least be decent as a mixer.

It's a bourbon that's somehow too sweet and too bitter at once.
Hmm probably dry too. Sometimes adding a few drops of vanilla extract or almond extract will make it blossom, depends on what you like. Couple drops of lemon juice will sometimes cut the over sweetness without robbing the flavor. I've experimented a little bit with adding different extracts to stuff to give it some life. Basically how they get your vanilla and apple etc flavors.

I'll add sugar, bitters, orange and cherry. I actually tried a Kentucky (Irish) coffee. It was fine.
 
Here's my favorite Old Fashioned recipe:
-rub orange peel on the inside of the glass
-a couple dashes of bitters
-1 tsp demerara simple syrup
-about 2 oz (or a little more :) ) bourbon or rye

Add ice and a luxardo cherry.

Yick.... not much of a sugar or soda person lol I've always been a fan of plain whiskey straight from the bottle

Sugar cube is only about 1 barspoon/tsp worth of sugar, and the splash of soda is only to help break it down and better incorporate. This compared to many cocktails that have .5 - 1oz of sugar plus other sweeteners. An old fashioned is a very spirit forward cocktail.

My preferred old fashioned is 3-4 dashes angostura bitters, 1 barspoon of rich simple syrup (2:1 sugar/water), 2oz bourbon (middle shelf like Elijah Craig small batch, Four Roses single barrel, or Buffalo Trace are usually what I go for), all over a large rock of ice with an expressed orange peel. I also like a maple syrup and rye combination.

Something about the sugar gives me a headache lol and soda always gives me heart burn, so I just preemptively stay away.

While I completely agree with this statement; sometimes the wallet is empty and the throat is dry:

Good for mixing in drinks that are NOT spirit forward: Kirkland Canadian Whisky at ~$20 for 1.75L from Costco.
Bourbon: Basil Hayden for ~$30 for a 750ML (great in Manhattan's -- add some orange bitters to your next Manhattan to take it to the next level)
Cheap (but drinkable) Scotch the 10 year Glenmorangie for ~$30 a 750ml; but I would recommend kicking it up to ~40-45 and go for the 12 year Balvenie Doublewood
Rye, Bulleit makes a good Rye (95%) for ~$30 per 750ml that you can't go wrong with for the money (Knob Creek also has a great Rye)
Irish whisky I would really avoid the cheaper stuff (I wouldn't recommend anything less than RedBreast) but if you really must, Tullamore Dew is okay at ~$25-$30 for a 750ml
