The cheap whiskey thread (2 Viewers)

They have a $20 bottle that is similar to the four roses that your drinking. My preferred poker room bottle is the OF 100 proof which is 24 bucks I think. Two of my favorite all time bottles are the OF Statesman and the the 1920.
My local grocery store recently added Old Forester 86 ($19), and OF 100 ($24). Is the 100 proof worth the extra?

restocked the basement with some middle shelf bottles. Great for poker night

Local shops here in Japan have 1L wild turkey 101 for 14$, for the price it's hard to beat. Buffalo trace for 22$ for 700ml is a close second and more favorite but a few bucks more. If price isn't a factor, Blantons original single barrel all day every day for about $40 or 4500¥. Havent tried four roses offerings but I hear good things!

Exactly this.

I have been recommending buffalo trace to anyone that cares to listen to me for the last 10 years. Just can’t beat the combo of value and quality. Unfortunately it’s getting a lot harder to find. Luckily I picked up 4 bottles to stash over the holidays.
Im a huge fan both of the trace and Blanton's single barrel from the same distillery. I can never find them when I visit the family back in North Carolina but in a weird twist I can get it anytime and almost every liquor store here in Japan, even the "Gold" edition that is international only (not in US) is well stocked.

Only reason I can figure is the exorbitant taxes they are somehow able to sidestep with exporting their products. It's pretty sad that it's both cheaper and easier to find in Japan than in NC, which is literally adjacent to Kentucky where they make it.

That's awesome! Is Bourbon big over in that neck of the woods?! Just bought my first bottle of Blanton's within the last couple of weeks and had to pay $100, I believe a $30 premium over sticker for it.

This Jameson’s Black Barrel is tasty!

Just bought my 2nd bottle of Four Roses. I think it's the perfect entry bourbon. Inexpensive, tasty, and easy to drink at 80 proof. So good!

My sister works at Costco in Iowa City. Elijah Craig Small Batch $23, Four Roses $20, Four Roses Small Batch $26, 1792 $28. Who knows what else is there!

It’s a veritable cheap whiskey wonderland!!!

EJ is 30 bucks here.

So help me out, fellas. I love Jameson. I'll drink it neat or with ice. Pretty much the same with Crown Royal, except it's not quite a s sweet, so I prefer Jameson. Jim Beam, I don't care for - if I have it, it's with ginger ale or coke.
So there's my pallatte. What would I like that's cheaper than Jameson? There is a total wine near me.

Proper No.Twelve is a less expensive Irish whiskey. I've heard it's good, but I've never tried it myself. I love Four Roses regular, for about $22 locally. I'm not sure how bourbon compares to Irish whiskey in terms of sweetness.

Any North American whisky, however it's called / branded, "should" (or, is supposed to) be sweeter than Irish, so I 'm surprised that @upNdown says Jameson is sweeter than Crown Royal (it's been ages since I tasted the latter, though).
If moderate sweetness (whisky-wise) is your thing you can't err with bourbon. Most decent cheap one, IMO, is the Four Roses (clearly better than Jim Beam, IMO).

Edit: Talking of cheap alcohol (good quality though), try this out of the freezer in the 6 hotter months of the year:

I took it as Jameson is not quite as sweet as Crown, but I could be wrong,
